Vista RC1
Posted by karram on September 30, 2006
I had been dreaming about running Vista on my comp for a long time. When Microsoft announced the public beta, I excitedly downloaded the dvd and then signed up for the beta, only to realize that I should have done it the other way. A million folks probably beat me to it, and the product keys were all gone.
I had given up all hope of ever participating in the beta, and was just despondently following the news about RC1. I check my windows-live mail once a month, and this time, I had a surprise in store. There was a mail from Microsoft, with details of the latest Vista dvd, and the product keys for the same. Yippee !
I had two options to download the dvd : Use the Akamai download manager, or use a tool like Wget. Spoke to a friend of mine who had already downloaded RC1, and he said that akamai download manager gave him some trouble. Apparently this chap had to restart the download thrice. So I chucked it, and fired up good old wget, and 28 hours later (:( I only have a 256 kbps connection) had the dvd image ready.
Installing vista was a breeze. The whole thing was over in about 30 mins. And so far, it has been great. The eye candy called Aero is amazing. Here is a sample screenshot :

The only niggle I’ve had so far is related to the infamous UAP. I have not been able to delete a particular file on my pc. I get an error about permissions, and that is that.

Hey, there.
So, is there a reason that the stylesheets aren’t showing up on your blog?
Anyway, from what I’ve seen Vista seems to be “inspired” by OSX.

@ Metlin
No stylesheets coz i have turned them off
.
Well, the OSX connection might be there. But at least vista runs on general hardware. Not just overpriced hot-as-hell hardware from just one vendor.

Ah, that figures. Was not sure if it was a glitch or was intentional.
Well, I’m not particularly a Mac-fan, but Macs aren’t really overpriced anymore.
For an apples to apples configuration, an iBook or a Powerbook (MacBook or MacBook Pro) cost about the same as an IBM, and desktop Macs are equally cheap, too.
And all said and done, Apple products are rather nice, you know. Good quality, good price and all that.

I wanted to buy an iBook. But I dropped the idea after checking the cost of one in India.
And my reference point for pricing would not be an IBM(or Lenovo) but rather a Dell.
Do you know any other company that, having introduced a laptop model and after getting complains about heat, came out with a press statement that basically said “Chaps, you cant keep this laptop on your lap. Its not meant to be used that way” ?

Sigh.. I don’t know.. Got tired of it soon enough. Might upgrade to it at some time but not terribly excited. Except maybe the eye candy. And DirectX10. I don’t know. Time and tide will decide. Wait a minute. Tide? Oh crap! I forgot to take the clothes out the washing machine (we use Tide
)
