Comments in blog.

Posted by karram on May 22, 2006

Comments bring a blog to life. Comments let us know people actually read the stuff that we write , and they help people exchange ideas on the topic. They can also be used for shameless self-promotion (on the lines of "Great stuff. See my blog at …"). Even those eternal optimists who sell oil stocks, those who need to transfer millions of dollars out of Nigeria (or some other country) or those that promise a better "experience" if you use their drugs, resort to commenting in blogs.

Now, commenting, if done correctly, is extremely useful. You see a blog, mark a comment about it, the author responds with another comment (in the same blog) etc, and what you get to see is a non-realtime-meaningful-conversation.

However, there is another style of commenting, similar to "scrapping" in online communities like orkut. This is where you mark a comment on a blog, and the author responds to that with a comment in *your* blog. Result, there is no meaningful conversation, and other visitors to the blog confused.

Consider a random blog, blog1.

"… And, a quick update. I have been given the pink slip, and no longer have a job :( . And my bank balance is low too. Hope I dont end up on streets".

Another blog, blog 2:

"Can you solve this puzzle ?…"

Lets say blogger 1 solves the puzzle, and puts the answer as a comment in blog 2.

Blogger 2 responds with a comment in blog 1 "Great work. Congrats".

Now what would a random visitor to blog1 think ?

Another example.

Blog 1 : ".. And, my partner is carrying…."

Blog 2 : "And, after the party, I found some-xyz-thing left behind by someone"..

blogger1s_comment_on_blog_2 : Hey thats my stuff.

blogger2s_comment_on_blog_1 : Oh, they are yours ? You have any proof ?"

Blogger 3 visiting blog 1 sees this :

Blog 1 : ".. And, my partner is carrying…."
blogger2s_comment_on_blog_1 : Oh, they are yours ? You have any proof ?"

See the post titled "My Nightmares", and read the second paragraph. Then read comment 9. A bloke who read my blog connected these two, and wondered (aloud) if I wrote about her. Now, the lady who made that comment is already married, and the comment was in response to a comment I made in her blog.

Hastilly, I put a disclaimer (comment 10 in the aforementioned post :) ).

Talk about ROFL moments……..

Isnt it soo in the scheme of things that I had to be the first one to see this..
That was rather stupid of me..to carry over a conversation from my blog here..Like you said, it was borrowing from the scrapping on orkut, though I dont do that consistently either.
Comments should ideally be contained in one thread in one place, but I guess sometimes it gets so conversational and you want to *tell* the other person some thing..and leaving a comment on ur post and being vain enough to think they’ll keep checking back isnt a great idea either
All said, I can see how rofl it would have been :D

At times, comments are more enjoyable than the actual post.
